6 februari 2017: Seminar International Education

The Municipality of Leiden and Expat Centre Leiden are happy to invite you to a free seminar on the Dutch education system. During this seminar Annebet van Mameren from New2nl will explain all you need to know about the Dutch education system. She will discuss the level of Dutch education compared to other Western countries, the differences in educational philosophies (Montessori, Dalton, Waldorf, etc.), preschool, secondary school, international schools, after-school care, and much more. The focus will be on the schools in Leiden and the surrounding towns. Sign up on the Leiden Expat Centre website.

2 and 3 October 2016: Leidens Ontzet / Drie Oktober

The 3 October festival is an annual festival in Leiden. The festival commemorates the anniversary of the 1573–1574 Siege of Leiden, during the Eighty Years' War, when the Spanish Army attempted to capture the city. The city centre of Leiden will be the stage of a variety of events such as a funfair and market. The festival usually starts a day or two before the main event itself. Leiden university will be closed on 3 October.

16 September: Tax advice

We are aware that for you as an international staff member living in The Netherlands can have its challenges, especially when it comes to Dutch tax/financial issues. In order to assist you with any tax issue you may have, Leiden University has concluded a favourable agreement with LIMES international tax + expat BV (“LIMES”) regarding practical assistance with your Dutch tax issues.

The Tourist Tram The Hague

A very good way to enjoy the hightlights of The Hague from coast to city centre. In 14 possible stops you can discover The Hague by a historic tram. As of July 2016 the Tourist tram will operate on Saturdays en Sundays in the summer months. The trans runs every half hour between 9:30 and 17:30.

13 August: Flower Parade

The Flower Parade: a splendid floral procession in August. The procession will set off from Rijnsburg on Saturday 13 August, and will travel through Katwijk to Noordwijk. On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 August the floats will be on display at the Koningin Wilhelmina Boulevard in Noordwijk. From 18.30 hrs. the procession will be expected to arrive in Noordwijk.

15 August: Free online course - Introduction to Dutch

Learn to speak, write and understand basic Dutch, with this free, three-week, introductory foreign language course.

This course is aimed at people with no prior knowledge of the Dutch language, who have a strong interest in learning languages. It will give you a taste of language skills that will help you to survive in Dutch-speaking countries. The main focus will be on receptive skills like reading and listening.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • introduce yourself and get to know other learners
  • talk about your family, friends, work and study
  • write short texts such as an email or fill in forms with personal details.

University of Groningen Language Centre
The course will be taught in English by lecturers of Dutch and English from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

7 August: Westland Flower Parade

Two great Dutch specialities, growing flowers and canal-faring, come together in three day long floating procession across the region of Westland. During the Westland Flower Parade more than 50 boats decorated with flowers and vegetables will passing by for your viewing pleasure.

5 August: Castlefest

Imagine yourself in a completely different world at Castlefest, the major Fantasy event of the Netherlands. A festival for young and old, where you enter a different universe as soon as you pass its gates. Castlefest is a complete experience with loads of music, fantasy authors, great food and a sizeable market with everything a lover of fantasy could wish for.

20 July: Hortus festival 2016

From 20 July until 28 August the Hortus botanicus will be the setting for the annual Hortus Festival. The musical festival that is held in five botanical gardens through The Netherlands will focus on the music of America, The New World. Tickets will be on sale from 1 July on. The entire programme will be announced also on 1 July.

18 juni 2016: Vlaggetjesdag Scheveningen (The Hague)

“Vlaggetjesdag (Flag Day)” that's how this particular day of shore reaching of the herring fleet is officially called.

Various activities around the second harbor of Scheveningen (coast area The Hague) such as puppet theatre, beach Soccer, eating herring, taptoe, old crafts and musical performances.

28 May 2016: Museumnacht Leiden

The Museumnacht shows you the mueums from Leiden in Another Night Light
Museumnacht Leiden makes culture accessible to the widest possible audience. Something to do for everyone, including you!
The entry ticket for Museumnacht Leiden is a wristband. This wristband counts as a passe-partout for all participating museums, the transport and the Afterparty at Gebr. de Nobel.

13,14,15 May 2016: Dusk City, Leiden

Schemerstad (Dusk City) is a theatrical event in Leiden on 13, 14 and 15 May. The audience sits in open boats and sails from one performance to the next. With the city as a backdrop artists from diverse disciplines show how they have been inspired by their surroundings. Dance, mime, projection, many forms of theatre are represented.

5 May 2016: Liberation Day Festival, The Hague

De Liberation Day Festival takes place on May 5. You are welcome on Malieveld between 12.00 and 23.00 hours for free concerts by international artists.

2 March: Expat Tax Event
