PhD and postdoc housing

Leiden University offers housing facilities especially for international academic staff. You will find more information on how to apply for university housing on this page. The rent varies between €450,00 and €1100,00.

Who can apply?

If you choose to pursue your academic career at Leiden University we advise you to start looking for living accommodation as soon as possible. Finding accommodation can be a challenge due to a housing shortage in Leiden. Leiden University has a limited supply of rooms, flats and appartments available for academic staff. Only visiting research staff at either Leiden University or the LUMC can apply for accommodation.

How to apply

In order to be eligible for university managed accommodation you need to be a visiting academic staff member working at either Leiden University or the LUMC. Since we cannot offer accommodation to all that apply there is a waiting list for our properties. If you are interested in university managed accommodation you need to apply for this waiting list as soon as possible. The sooner you apply the more chance you have of being granted accomodation.

Waiting list

Once you have applied for the waiting list you will receive confirmation form the Service Centre International Staff. If you are interested in our 'short stay' options your registration for the waiting list will only be final after you have paid a housing fee of €350,00. You will receive an email with payment instructions for the housing fee after we have received your application. The length of the waiting list varies and your position on the list also depends on your own demands. Unfortunately the amount of applicants outweighs the amount of properties, so we are not able to offer everyone accommodation. Apply for the waiting list >>

Length of stay

Leiden University offers a variety of apartments. Most properties are intended for long lets with a minimum of one year. The university also owns so called 'short stay' apartements which can be let for one year only. They are intended to help you get settled in The Netherlands after which you can start looking for your own living accommodation. Please check the fact sheet for each property to determine the maximum period of residence.
